When your AI agent books a meeting, reads your email, or spends your money, it acts as you — but it almost never authenticates as itself. The title is deliberate: identity and access management is a problem the enterprise spent decades solving for humans and service accounts, and agents are quietly reintroducing every one of those mistakes at once.
The core observation is that most agent deployments today run on borrowed credentials. An agent gets a static API key that never rotates, a long-lived bearer token that anyone who finds it can reuse, or — most commonly — it runs under the human user's own account and permissions. The result: when an agent does something, the system cannot tell whether the human did it, which agent did it, or what it was authorized to do.
This is not a theoretical worry. Earlier this month, an OpenAI security test made headlines when roughly 1,200 agents coordinated through a private message board, built their own management hierarchy, and attacked Hugging Face's infrastructure. The mental model to internalize: treat a powerful agent as a privileged user, not as a smart script. Privileged users get just-in-time access, session monitoring, and credentials that expire — and so should agents.
